Sheffield International Venues has helped launch a new Sports Employment Project for people with disabilities. Concord Sports Centre, has agreed to host a work trial for Alexander Thompson, as part of a link-up between Action for Employment and The Federation of Disability Sports Organisations.
Alexander, a  sports leader who has learning disabilities, recently qualified  as a lifeguard, and is now hoping to step up into the work environment, as a Leisure Assistant, where he will receive on-the job training in all aspects of the job. It is hoped that ultimately Alexander will be able to find a permanent role within SIV. It is a fantastic success story for Alexander, who has, with support of family & friends worked tirelessly to gain qualifications that would help him achieve his dream role. Now, with the continued backing of FDSO, SIV, and Action for Employment, he has been given an opportunity to make his mark in the leisure industry.
Proud mum, Jayne said:
“This is fantastic news for us. We’re delighted that Concord have been so supportive. We know that Alexander is capable of doing the role, he just needs that extra bit of support, which the staff at Concord seem happy to provide. This work placement gives him the chance to show what he can do, in a supportive environment, and the chance to build up his confidence.”

Fiona Hall, Regional Officer for  FDSO said.
“It’s brilliant news for the partnership between FDSO and Action for Employment. The fact that SIV has so willingly opened its arms to welcome someone with a disability on a work trial, leads the way for other employers. We now have an example of a clear pathway for people with disabilities to follow, and Alexander is a shining example that even with barriers, there are still opportunities available. We will monitor Alexander’s progress, and work closely with Concord to provide any support they need.
