Sporting Voices
We initially realised funding just for people with learning disabilities, but the project has now been expanded due to a 5 year award from the Big Lottery for expansion into all areas of ability as well as marginalised areas of the community including women and girls as well as BME groups.
‘Sporting Voices’ is based on sports committee training, but focuses on Key Skills such as communication, organisation and planning (all inherent within committee work). The overall aim is to give confidence and experience, allowing people the opportunity to have their voices heard in the community.
It is a 14 week course based on 2 hours per week but is very flexible in terms of time scale. For the higher levels (2 & 3) extra work is required to be done outside this basic 28 hours learning time this is usually 14+ hours. The course is accredited by the Open College Network up to level 3 (which is A' level standard) starting at a very basic introductory level.
The course delivers modules in:
1. Sports Participation and Planning
2. Organisation of Sport
3. Working on Sports Committees
4. Principles of Enabling and Facilitation
5. Essentials of Communication
6. Jobs on Sports Committees
7. Sports Committee Meetings
8. Preparing for a Sports Event
9. Event Management
10. Event Evaluation
The course is very flexible and can be run for disability impairment specific groups, mixed ability, or for non disabled people. The course materials can be adapted into Braille, tape or into any other format required.
There is no formal end of course assessment, it is continually assessed by the tutor and then a portfolio of work is viewed by an external moderator before certification is awarded.
The course cost nothing to students, or facilitators / enablers, all registration is paid for by the Federation of Disability Sports Organisations we can also financially solve most transport issues that might arise.
