DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT PROJECT (January 2010)

Regional Resource Officer, Fiona Hall is looking into the possibility of linking up with employment agencies in the region, to set up a Sports Employment project for people with disabilities. In particular, it is hoped to link up people who have been on sports leaders/ Sporting Voices courses with volunteer opportunities, or paid employment in the sports industry.

PMLD KITEMARK NEWS

The application process for PMLD Kitemark was  re-vamped in September 2009 to make it more user-friendly. Applications for 2009-10 awards have been received, and awards will be announced at the FDSO Annual Awards Dinner.

Awards For All
Disport has been successful in gaining funding from Awards for All to run three projects:-
Valuing Volunteers (2003)  was a project to acknowledge the massive input by volunteers to support people with a learning disability. As a result of the project, volunteers were rewarded with support training, event kit (polo shirts), expenses for events, and the launch of a dedicated award at the annual FDSO Sports Awards dinner.

Focus on Skill Development Project (2005) was a project to support people with a learning disability by encouraging them to pursue skills awards in three sports:- Cricket, rugby & athletics. Hundreds of participants benefited from sessions held across the region, with certificates in all three sports being issued. Training was also given to support teachers in their onward development of skills based work for their participants.

 

 

Profound & Multiple Learning Disabilities Project (Current)

An award of £10,000 was made in 2008 to provide a number of Training courses to support teachers providing sport & leisure opportunities for young people with Profound & Multiple Learning Disabilitie.These courses include: Rebound Therapy, Floatsation, Table Cricket, Dance & Movement, Elements, and Halliwick. In addition, two courses for Teachers delivering PE to young people with Autism have also been arranged.

  As part of the Disport PMLD Project, a Kitemark system has been set up

The Disport Kitemark for Provision of Sport & Leisure for People With Profound & Multiple Learning Disabilities

Disport invites Schools/ Centres/ Organisations to apply for the Disport Kitemark Gold award.

Kitemarks will be provided to centres providing evidence of excellence in provision of sporting opportunities & services for PMLD.

Awards will be presented at the FDSO Annual Awards Dinner

Winners will be presented with a Kitemark Plaque/ Trophy & will be widely acknowledged by the FDSO media. It is hoped that this pilot scheme will be adopted Nationally.

Partnerships With Colleges & Universities

Disport has enjoyed a successful partnership with The Leisure Management Unit of the University of Sheffield for over 15 years. The Leisure Management Unit undertakes to manage one of  the annual Disport Athletics events, and begin planning this event in January. Responsibilities include fundraising, co-ordination of finance, co-ordination of volunteers, generating publicity, arranging catering and entertainment. Each year, fundraising initiatives raise around £3000 towards the cost of the Championships.

Local colleges also support the regional qualifying events. Colleges offering Sports Development / Leisure management courses use the Disport Athletics event to fulfil the Planning an Event module aspect of their course
