About the FDSO

The FDSO, in consultation with its member organisations, produces each year a Business and Development Plan, which sets out the development work that it will carry out. The FDSO works with its strategic partners, the English Federation of Disability Sport and Sport England to meet these objectives, which will bring greater opportunities for people with disabilities; more sports, more choices and the chance to have a say in how sport is planned and delivered.

In addition to this development work, FDSO produces an annual calendar of events, activity and sports development days, coaching courses and competitive events for people of all abilities and age groups. In order to do this, FDSO employs a professional team of Sports Development Officers and has a Regional Manager as well as Administration and Project Officers to carry out this work.  See HERE
for details

Whilst the FDSO receives funding from the EFDS to carry out some of its development work, it also works with commercial partners, local authorities and the National Lottery to help provide the necessary funding to meet the needs of the other projects and programmes. Sponsors help us to stage some of our competitive events, training programmes and the Annual Awards Dinner, which will be held this year at Leeds Uniteds Elland Road Ground.

The FDSO advises disability groups, clubs and associations on how to get started; setting up, constitutions, applying for funding and promoting its activities; it also gives advice and training to mainstream clubs on how to provide disability friendly services.

The FDSO advises individuals on where to go to access facilities and clubs in their chosen sport and on how to progress to their chosen level, from just trying out, to elite competition level.

There are over twenty sports being coordinated by the Federation of Disability Sports and over sixty events and development days

The FDSO's Chief Executive is Kevan Halliday-Brown. Kevan says 'The Federation is involved in major community development strategies and works alongside Sport England to ensure access and inclusion in all new and existing programmes for people with disabilities.  We also work closely with the regional disability-specific sports organisations to target our development programmes to meet their aims and aspirations.  As a result, I am confident that we are providing properly coordinated and strategic solutions to meet the assessed needs of people of all ability levels throughout Yorkshire and Humberside.  Under the umbrella of the English Federation of Disability Sport, we are able to link with the eight other regional disability organisations throughout England and work together on important national projects such as the Inclusive Fitness Initiative which provides adapted fitness equipment, and the Inclusive Sports Club Programme which provides the important training back-up to help people with disabilities to access and utilise new facilities'.
