Actionnaires Clubs
Action for Blind People run multi-sport activity clubs for visually impaired children, their siblings and friends. The main objectives of the clubs are to “aid the development of each child’ s self-confidence, social interaction and their ability to develop a range of physical skills.”
External coaches deliver a block of specialist sports sessions (Eg.
Athletics, Cricket, Football, Goalball, Ju-jitsu, etc.) after which children are given the opportunity to participate in a skills assessment or tournament.
The Huddersfield Club meet every Saturday from 10am to 1pm at Huddersfield Sports Centre whilst the Hull Club also meet every Saturday but from 12pm to 3pm at Woodford Leisure Centre. For the final hour of both sessions, swimming is available.
For further information about either club, please contact Ross Ford (Action for Blind People Sports Development Officer) on 01772 320550 or via Ross.Ford@actionforblindpeople.org.uk.
Yorkshire VIP FC
In October 2003, the Federation of Disability Sports Organisations (FDSO) with support from British Blind Sport (BBS) plus the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA held a ‘Football Development Day’ for Blind and Partially Sighted children.
Such was the response that the Yorkshire Visually Impaired Players Football Club (“The VIP’s”) was formed. Therefore, since January 2004, players of all ages and sight classifications from throughout the county have travelled to Sheffield one Sunday per month to participate in a coaching session aimed at developing their footballing skills.
In addition, the club has successfully competed in both the BBS tournament in Birmingham and the London Junior VI tournament, picking up silverware in the process. Furthermore, their overall achievements were recognised when they were presented with the FDSO Junior Team of the Year Award 2004.
